Thank goodness - all children from Henryville school now accounted for. From the brief video that I have seen this a was an EF4 tornado. The school was almost swept clean.

Things slowly starting to crank up in north Alabama, Birmingham under a severe storm watch and the NWS expecting explosive convection already underway, firing storms off into the late evening there.

Looks grim, Henrysville and Marysville look devastated and reports of not a lot left of the towns themselves. Very sad.

I think that will also be increased from the footage being shown earlier, a rare early Spring event in Tornadic fashion with unconfirmed EF4 Tornados. I'm still virtual chasing and have been with Mike Phelps and Brett Adair tonight, stunning yet saddening.

At least 28 dead. Marysville 'wiped off the map'. :(

For all it's faults, excellent report in the Daily Mail with a lot of photos:

Condolences go out to all effected by these storms!
A nightmare scenario for any chaser with mostly rain wrapped type tornadoes with low visibility running in a train like motion. Very hard to be of any use by calling in these tornadoes under such mayhem. Very easy to get trapped or even become part of casualty total.

Excellent analysis of various satellite data for this episode, including cloud top conditions and overshoots vs ground reports, from the CIMSS blog:

Apparently TPW vales were around 200% above average for the time of year for some areas.

Jim Bishop and Simon Brewer caught the Henryville tornado: photos and video here http://www.stormgasm...2-12/3-2-12.htm

The most striking images are of the damage to the road itself with asphalt slabs up to 8" thick ripped up and flung tens of metres, causing impact cratering. Have never seen anything like that before.

Cheers - John

Higher resolution cloud top conditions (just prior to one of the more severe tornadoes) from VIIRS, as well as a view of tornado tracks in KY and WV the day after:
