The feeling that the word 'Convection' has disappeared in the mists of time.....

However, cold trough, slack gradients and lengthening days should allow for some reasonable convection this weeked, best in west and north on Saturday, then in east and southeast on Sunday. Chance of some weakly organised clusters on convergence lines. Mod risk hail/graupel, low risk thunder. Vis between showers should be good or excellent.

Nothing too dramatic, but something to whet the appetite.

I'm definitely liking the idea of some home-grown convection for this Saturday afternoon. Going to the races in Uttoxeter so hopefully a grandstand view (groan..).

Aye, some localised, hefty downpours are going to keep DIY fans/shoppers/sporting punters on their toes tomorrow..hopefully with a few sparks mixed it.That faint grumble of distant thunder would be welcomed lol.

so clouds do extend through more than one layer of the atmosphere

Forerunner of the trough seems to be moving across us now, quite clear bright line in the sat imagery over the North Downs.

Nothing of note in Hampshire again. I've just returned from a 70 mile trip to the north and east of the county and encountered nothing more than scattered light showers and overcast conditions.

Getting to see some wide but wispy anvils to my south from Cu growing overhead, not much to speak of but an encouraging skyscape for a change!

Might have a wander out with the camera later if this is still going on, some nice wispy edges could create some irridescence.

Just had a very sharp sleet shower here in Corby. Still falling but moderated a lot.

Just spent 10 mins looking north watching the Good Year blimp getting a bit 'nose happy' around the back of a small convective shower. Thought for a moment he was a goner when the nose failed to lift and he dropped a fair way, but the craft levelled out and continued west pretty quickly. Must be a bit of a rollercoaster ride up there!

Also made a low-res time lapse with a camcorder I got off ebay recently. Looking NW for most of the afternoon, includes the brief hail shower we had.

The CB that i posted from the webcam above came over Tiverton afterwards. It was one of the biggest anvils i have seen for several years. It had a very high ceiling too (for the UK i guess).
Some real nice structure looking at it from the rear......

We had quite a strong hail shower here in Gosport just after 3pm Sunday. Looked like freshly laidsnow for a time
