After a damp and dull day looked out back and saw this lot come over, talk about timing

Great photo's, Lee! :) Today certainly produced the odd isolated sferic and very localised convective showers. Though my take is that conditions here in Hampshire suggested a strong inversion at mid levels. When weak forcing occurs at surface we tend to get some oscillation of any rising parcel (bounce back) on reaching this capped level. The result will often show bulges of descending moisture much like mammatus. I'm a great fan of such development and photograph it whenever possible. ;)
Though realistically the true 'Whales Mouth' (which in fact look very similar to you photo's) formation is normally associated with a strong mid level jet stream where winds are asserted downward ahead of any storm cell or squall line.! Today, the jet looked to have shifted eastward at a much faster pace than earlier expectations
