A recent blog entry from the VIIRS Instrument Visualisation Team demonstrates an exciting capability of the new high resolution imager, currently orbiting aboard the Suomi NPP satellite launched last year. The imager makes use of the "Day/Night Band" which detects around the 0.7 µm wavelength, or low level visible light. Imagery posted from March 9th shows the veils of the Aurora Borealis over Canada during the strong geomagnetic storm caused by a CME of the 6th.
