Thought i would start this thread off in preparation for the Summer Max challenge to find out where the hottest place on average using just the maximum temperatures. Am aiming at 5 or 6 per country from Spain. Portugal, Italy and France, and any other countries considered. Any help with deciding which stations to use would be great. Joseph as suggested the following from his Iberian thread for Spain

1. Andujar
2. Montoro
3. Lorca
4. La Rambla
5. Sevilla
6. Mengíbar

Considerations for Portugal i have a few ideas but if Francesco (Stormy) and Costa would like to give their options that would be great, ones i am considering are

1. Amareleja
2. Reguengos
3. Pinhao Santa Barbara
4. Elvas
5. Alcacer do Sol

For Greece and hopefully Pit can help me with this i am looking at the following

1. Megara
2. Athens Thiseio
3. Sivas (interior Crete)
4. Athens Filadelfeia
5. Athens Elefsina

For Italy and France i need more help please

After agreeing the stations i would like to start a trial, purely for looking at the reliability of the stations, do not want sporadic readings and i will probably run this for the whole month of April.

Morgane will surely advise for France but I will suggest for one Le Luc (Provence) which reports through Ogimet with synop ref 07675

http://www.ogimet.co...&day=26&hora=18

Quote

With 119.3 days per year (source: Meteo France, calculated over the period 1971-2000), Le Luc is the municipality with the most "summer days" in France , that is to say, days for which the maximum temperature is greater than or equal to 25°C.

Thanks Dave :)

For Italy i am thinking of these, Catania Sigonella, Amendola, Decimomannu, Alghero, Trapani and perhaps Cagliari

For France I will also suggest from the synop list. There may be others that are better that don't report through synop.

Nimes-Courbessac
Marseille-Marignon or Istres or Salon
Toulon
Calvi

Ian, you might be surprised that Firenze / Florence actually has higher average maxes for summer than Trapani and Cagliari (and Rome or Naples for that matter).

And for a "wildcard" how about Podgorica in Montenegro or Skopje in FYROM?

Hello friends!

Well, there is all the same a problem with France in summer:
while Le Luc, Carpentras, Conqueyrac, Les Arcs-sur-Argens and co. do have very high maxes, they "suffer" from having pretty cool minis. On the other hand, if we pick up stations that have very high minis (for instance Menton, Nice), they "suffer" from having pretty cool maxes.

As a consequence, in France, you can't have your cake and eat it, that is you can't have both high minis and high maxes, which is a problem to compete here. :D I personally think France should also compete here only as a wildcard, with only 3 stations (one for its high maximums, one for its high minimums, and one that have balanced temperatures).

What do you think, Ian, Dave?

Oh, and is it possible to include stations that are not present on Ogimet, like Menton, Conqueyrac?

The minima don't matter here though as Ian wants only to use the daily maxima B)

Hi Morgane so those 4 stations you mention above, do you want me to use them? and yes you can include stations from meteoclimat, no problem if you can stretch it to 5 or 6 stations that would be great :)

3.Serres HNMS
3.Filadelfeia,Athens HNMS
4.Pirgela HNMS
5.Sofades HNMS

runner ups could be Thiseio NOA ,Larisa HNMS or Megara NOA

Hi Ian,

I've made my list for the European Summer MAX Challenge:

So, I've chosen 3 stations from Météo-Climat and 3 stations that also appear on OGIMET, for an easier use for you: :)

Le Luc (Var) (OGIMET)
Carpentras (Vaucluse) (OGIMET)
Nîmes-Courbessac (Gard) (OGIMET) (don't take Nîmes-Garons, this one is cooler)

Conqueyrac (Gard) (Météo-Climat)
Les Arcs-sur-Argens (Var) (Météo-Climat)
Manosque (Alpes-de-Haute-Provence) (Météo-Climat)

Ian, when you search Météo-Climat, please choose the right department, for an easier use and a quicker loading. ;)

Here the three most important links (I've put the settings on 1st January 2012 21:00 UTC, MAX temperatures in decreasing order - you will just have to change the dates) ;)

GARD department (link)

VAR department (link)

ALPES-de-HAUTE-PROVENCE department (link)

As for wild cards, we could also pick one station from Croatia and one from Albania if it's findable. :)

Thanks a bunch Ian for your enthusiasm and playfulness. [y]

Croatia yes, any suggestions? Maybe Makarska ? Albania only has one and thats the Capital Tirana and the station is about as much use as an ashtray on a motorcycle! It only records when it wants to, lol

Hey, indeed, I was thinking of Makarska, too. I think it's warmer than Dubrovnik.

Hope this won't be too much work for you?

If I remember well, you're leaving for the USA in May/June, just before the challenge starts?
