Hey, indeed, I was thinking of Makarska, too. I think it's warmer than Dubrovnik.

Hope this won't be too much work for you?

If I remember well, you're leaving for the USA in May/June, just before the challenge starts?

Yes, that is why I wanted to do a trial first before i leave, i am away from 23rd May to 13th June, the challenge will run from June 15th to Sept 15th. The month long trial in April is really all about making sure the stations we pick are reliable, with consistent readings etc. I must say i am looking forward to this, Spain and Portugal you would think would run away with it but i am not so sure, Pit as put up some really hot places in Greece and any local heatwaves in any of the countries could swing it, or cold spells for that matter, lol

Actually for another idea for a wildcard - how about Plovdiv in Bulgaria? Some impressive average maxima, see http://en.wikipedia....Plovdiv#Climate

I grant it may not be a holiday destination but...it is warmer than locations in Croatia.

OK Cheers Dave ok i will run with 3 wild cards, Plovdiv, Podgorica-Grad and Plovdiv, could push one more and that would be it - that would make 34 stations in total

What about Mostar in Bosnia? It can have some very long runs of temps in the high 30's in high summer..

Nice one Chris, Although they dont have excessively high temps i.e over 40C they do have regular temps over 35C sustained, just checked the last 3 Augusts using Ogimet, so thats the last wild card then, cheers :)

Here is what my spreadsheet looks like, hence i can not fit anymore in, only change existing ones, i have had good advice from Spain, France and Greece and the wild cards and some advice from Italy, but none from Portugal only my own limited knowledge

Yes, Plovdiv is impressive, but, is it me or does this 48°C-record sounds fake all the same?

Yes as far as i know Sadova in the Plovdiv province does hold the Bulgarian record but its 45.2C which occurred on 5th August 1916, probably a wind up towards the Greeks! LOL, .....calm down Pit if your watching hehe ;)

Considerations for Portugal i have a few ideas but if Francesco (Stormy) and Costa would like to give their options that would be great, ones i am considering are

1. Amareleja
2. Reguengos
3. Pinhao Santa Barbara
4. Elvas
5. Alcacer do Sol

I would not choose Alcácer do Sal. I would choose instead Viana do Alentejo or Mirandela.

There is one new station in IM which i think it can have some interesting values for the summer too, Pegões.

The best spots in Portugal for maximum temperatures are:

Pinhão

Zebreira

Portalegre-cidade

Alcacer do Sal

Viana do Alentejo

Alvega

Amareleja

Reguengos

And the best spots for warmer minimum temperatures are:

Vila Real de Santo António ( near Castro Marim)

Faro

Lisbon ( Geofisico)

Sines-Cabo

In global average i would choose with no doubt:

Pinhão

Zebreira

Reguengos

Amareleja

Castro Marim

Thanks Stormy so for the hottest summer average maximums i will go with your 5 selected, if i am reading this right :

Pinhao
Zebreira
Reguengos
Amareleja
Castro Marim
And go with Costa`s suggestion Viana do Alentejo

Must say I am surprised at Castro Marim :o

Stormy suggested Castro Marim for the mean average, not for the max, which is the purpose of this challenge i suppose!

Well if you are gonna pick Bulgaria (and I was actually thinking of mentioning it) then no doubt it should be Sandanski...

Having checked both Plovdiv and Sandanski past summer temps i agree.

Here is the 1st day of this 1 month trial and already we have problems, with 2 locations not recording, but i guess this is what this months trial is about, not actually winning but ironing out potential problems with reliable recording etc

I'm afraid that Conqueyrac might not record some times, because when I do my monthly thread, the station doesn't always appear.

This first trial is indeed a good way to put a focus on the possible non-working stations and on some funny readings. Thanks Ian! ;)

If there's any problem with the French ones, we'll try together to choose others from Ogimet/Météo Climat.

Good to see even in the trial my 'wild card' was bottom of the pile ;)

Ian concerning Greece's HNMS I am sure you know that you will face some problems with some of them not appearing daily on the site.My guess is that either Pyrgela or Sofades will give you the hardest time. Then both the Athenian station and Serres get the occasional issue of not reporting daily...we already saw this with Serres.Anyhows I was thinking that the strongest runner up would be Lamia HNMS because I have noticed that lately it started appearing more consistently on the HNMS site.In fact yesterday it recorded 25.5 and Greece's max.The only reason I did not mention Lamia is that I still need to be persuaded it will be as consistent as the past month in appearing on the HNMS site.If you get non reporting issues with an HNMS station then you should defo think about Lamia as an alternative.Larisa is pretty strong as well at least historically compared to Lamia but the past decade Lamia comes out with higher mean maxes consistently. So I would suggest you have especially Lamia at the back of your mind and also Larisa.

Don't fret, some of these places are still vulnerable to a cold plunge in April, expect it will be another matter when it starts for real. <_<

yep!Especially when it comes to Podgorica and Sandanski.I dont even know why we call them ''wild cards'' They beat the hell out of a good deal of the Iberian Peninsula,France,Italy and Greece when it comes to summer mean maxes :P
