Hi everyone! :)

So, I spoke to Ian a few days ago, and from this discussion emerged that I will 'kind of' run a small internal battle for France, to choose the best six stations. Thanks to him for letting me do that here. :)

Carpentras (Vaucluse) and Manosque (Alpes-de-Haute-Provence) will remain within the chosen ones anyway.

Two battles:

- one for the Var department (South-West of the Alps):

- one for the Gard department (South-East of the Massif Central):

A reminder of the summer heat challenge of 2011, i have highlighted the max temps, notice Elvas had higher maxes than Pinhao. Andujar is definitely the one to beat!

If you click on the left side of the attachment (it looks like one attachment but theres actually 2) above it gives you yesterdays figures, however here is what you requested anyway

Spain really doing poorly on the 6th, as none of its contenders succeed in reaching 20°C.

Ian I cant believe that I forgot Agrinio,HNMS for Greece   :o

oh God....I knew something was off..lol.Bsc I dont want to spoil your thread just to say that Agrinio is second in Greece after N.Filadelfeia in mean maxes for the entire summer period according to HNMS.It reports daily and consistently over in the site of HNMS.

Would you be willing to add Agrinio when u do the real thing or am I asking too much?I am sorry I forgot it.It totally slipped my mind

Ok given its 6 stations per country and seeing it wouldnt be fair for other countries it will have to boil down to either Larisa or Agrinio for Greece, however I must insist that Agrinio needs to enter competition for Greece its hotter than Larisa IMO...

Anyway think about it when u do the real thing.Let's not ruin your thread now.

Yes would like to keep it 6 max, but yes any of them can be changed before the thread starts, this month is really just about the reliability factor of the reporting stations. :)

I figured I should post this here :P

Just to demonstrate how high my expectations for Sivas in S.Crete is I calculated its mean maximum temperatures for far published by the NOA bulletins.Without any exception Sivas has been the station both from NOA and HNMS to have the highest mean maximum temperature in Greece per month. Each and every month,be it summer, autumn, winter or spring Sivas recorded the highest mean maximum in the country.

For each month I used the NOA bulletins found here

http://cirrus.meteo....ins.htm~Content

For March I estimated it adding a conservative 0.3C on top of the data of the nearest NOA station which is Moires ,for which you can find data here

http://penteli.meteo...ires/NOAAYR.TXT

And for the remaining two months of April and May (not showing on the table) I used the long term stats provided by HNMS from Tympaki station (its airport is by the sea) adding a yet conservative +1.5C on top of its values so that I could project a rather realistic scenario on what is to be expected from Sivas in terms of annual mean maxes.

The annual data of Tympaki are found here

http://www.hnms.gr/h...egion=ClimCrete

The result is roughly 25C annual mean maximum temperature for Sivas...Not bad if you compare it lets say with Seville that had a mean annual of 25.7C when Ian was doing his annual trial last year

http://www.ukweather...l/page__st__600

But to be fair and despite the cold autumn and winter in Greece I expect Sivas to have a higher annual mean maximum temperature once May is gone.I am gonna go with around 25.5C B) . I reckon that is pretty good for an area outside the Iberian Peninsula!

PS.Sorry Ian,no intention to high-jack your thread :)

Great stats Pit, I think that Greece will need a couple of heatwaves to have a chance against the likes of Andujar, just been checking last Augusts mean maxes,i think Sivas and Nea Filedelfeia stand the best chance of mixing it up with the Spanish lol

Mengibar 37.89C
Montoro 37.66C
Andujar 37.62C
Lorca 36.44C
La Rambla 36.37C
Seville 36.20C

I believe Sivas can pull it off this year.It is the only area outside Iberia to realistically stand a chance against the likes of Andujar, with or without heatwave that is, but at least one good heatwave would be welcome :P

Friends have faith in the Messara valley of South Crete ;)

Too bad we dont count Cyprus as Europe..its Messaoria valley is no match in Europe :P

Maybe we could put Nicosia and Lefkonico in as a "Go Compare" entrants, meaning they can not win it but just to make it interesting, bit like Jersey and Guernsey in my UK thread

Just checked Ogimet and here are the means for August 2011 just to compare with the ones i posted above

Lefkonico 38.02C
Nicosia 37.60C

Yes, I agree Ian. Two stations from Cyprus would be welcomed here.
