Hello dear members of UKWW,

got a problem with a TN report we recieved via ESWD yesterday and I don't know how to deal with that. The given information is not very consistent IMO... does anyone here have some information about that observation / report?

extract from the database:
-------------------------------------
tornado

Invergowrie
3 miles W of Dundee Scotland
United Kingdom (56.45 N, 3.05 W) (+/- 3 km)
03-04-2012 (Tuesday) 19:45 UTC (+/- 15 min.)

[...]
intensity and characteristics: F0 T0 The funnel cloud was observed.
accompanying weather: heavy snow, hail >= 2.0 cm in diameter.
size of accompanying hail: 2 cm
direction of movement: NE-SW
**UPDATE** Dundee Airport recorded a wind speed of 27 mph while the storm passed over (1 mile away from Invergowrie). Damage has been reviewed in Kingoodie, a branch off a tree has been blown over the seawall. Based on this, the intensity of this tornado/waterspout is F0.

Certainly not a tornado - no convection above what appears to be a very decayed cell. That is just a snow/ soft hail shaft imo.

Thank you. However, I also don't see any kind of significant visible rotation of that large cloud. Obviously, the witness named it "thunderstorm", the reporter named it "tornado" (in the end it could be a hail/graupel-shaft) and I wonder who might be responsible for the word's exchange? Does anyone know someone with the nick name "Kiewii" ??

I'm getting angry when people uses a dataset to fake reports.

cheers,
Thilo

Indeed, no rotation - in fact nothing to rotate and nothing above that shaft which could support a rotating mesocyclone. Uneducated media always seem to jump on reports like this - reminds me of the 'sherifnado' type reports you get in the USA!

Well certainly the guy - saw this on the updated page of windstorm events on wiki - correct me if I am wrong but I am not aware of any storm force winds lately?

Gritt April 2–Currently active 998 hPa Low system tracking south over the UK and Ireland bringing storm force winds and heavy snowfall, a week after many areas of the UK experienced temperatures above 20 °C (68 °F). 50,000 were without power in Northern England. Nine Belgian tourists were rescued from blizzards on Ben Macdui, Scotland. A cargo ship ran aground near to Conwy in Wales. The trans-Pennine Woodhead pass route was closed to traffic and the M62 motorway was disrupted. A tornado was confirmed near Invergowrie, Scotland.

Sincere apologies Thilo, it's one of the spotters for Skywarn UK who has been told before about submitting reports direct without QA. It's not fraudulent or malicious, just a lack of education/information. He is also a frequent user of the Wiki pages as well.

I'll deal with this forthwith.

I suspect this has been lifted straight from the BBC, which has been pushing this line all day. Presumably there's been a storm-force gust somewhere, and that's good enough for those who don't like the facts to stand in the way of a good story.

I see that 'iKiewiiB' refers on YouTube to this nondescript-looking shower as 'a tornado-like storm [which] passed southwestwards through dundee'. What's one of those? It's certainly not a confirmed tornado, F0 or otherwise.

Thank you. Seriously, I don't want to delete reports normally because I'm always happy when we recieve reports, but in this case I might delete the tornado report. The indicies are in contradiction to the report.

Thank you all for the discussion !

Hi All,

Thanks to Bazmundo for bringing this thread to my attention.

Whilst the reporter, Kiewii, is indeed a member of Skywarn UK, can I please stress that the report made is nothing to do with Skywarn UK and had not been submitted via our ClimaCore Severe Weather Database for QA or verification prior to being reported to ESWD.

Skywarn UK prides itself on maintaining high levels of QA in relation to any reports and has a dedicated Reports Co-ordinator, Forecast Team and Site Investigation team that, together, will verify all reports before passing them on to organisations like TORRO or ESWD

Thilo - please remove the report. It clearly is not a tornando. I have this morning posted to the SWUK forum and re-enforced the correct process for members to make reports and Kiewii has been contacted directly to leave him in no doubt of his mistake.

I look forward to continuing a productive partnership with ESWD in the future.

All the best

Chris

Good work. It's fairly uncommon for a tornado to be confirmed without a site-investigation afterwards - unless it is obviously one e.g. from video or images.

Cheers - John
