Whilst we here in the UK are expected to see more rain and for a time, low temperatures, those lucky enough to live in central and eastern Europe can expect to experience some unusually high temperatures for the time of year.

A mixture of strong warm advection dragging heat from the Sahara, coupled with a significant protracted fohn effect over several daysis expected to develop air with very high thicknesses across parts of eastern and northeastern Europe with TT100-500 of 564Dm or more across parts of Austria, Switzerland, Czech Republic and Poland.

Wit plenty of sunshine and decending air, temperatures may exceed 30C in the above mentioned area. With a 'rule of thumb' of adding 2 or 3 degrees for Super-Duper onto maxes flagged by GFS, might imply a max temp of near 32C across southeast Poland on Sunday or Monday.

I am not sure what the highest April temps for the above mentioned countries are, but I am sure the likes of BDG might provide us with an answer - with thanks of course!

Where is the "Beast from the East" when we need it, eh? ;)

For some examples of city records, Warsaw's highest for April is reportedly 29.1 °C, Krakow 29.6 °C, Wrocław 30.1 °C, Poznań 30.0 °C
. Not sure if these are alltime highs though or just a 30 year climate period. Don't know about the national record for April.

At least a mod possibility of some long term records falling in eastern Europe. GFS max temp as read is 29C over southeast Poland, not far from Kracow.

One problem with the Beast from the East in Spring, is its ability to generate Stratus over the North Sea and advect it west, giving some very grey, cold and miserable conditions to eastern parts of the UK.

These sorts of areas have benefited significantly, usually in mid summer from this sort of pattern in recent years that has also at the same time lead to some of our own recent poor summer conditions. Maybe it is good it is happening now and not in June, July etc.

Salzburg has reported 30.6 °C today, which beats by some distance the April city record of 27.9 °C.

Many max temps above 27.0 °C reported in the Poland synops for yesterday. Tomaszow at 27.7 °C the highest.

České Budějovice aka Budweis in the Czech Rep. 28.3 °C.
Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Germany 28.5 °C.

32 °C forecast for parts of again Austria today! WRT my post yesterday the record for Salzburg in April is actually 30.6 °C reported in 2003 so it looks like that was broken as Salzburg Freisaal hit 31.5 °C.

In fact it now seems to be a Austrian national record for April beating 31.0 °C in 1968:

Midday temps 29.6 at both Torun and Gorzow, Poland.

Many other areas 27.0 or more.

At 12z, exactly 30.0 °C at Moghylev, Ukraine the highest I could find. Quite a few places in Germany too plus Salzburg reporting a rounded 30 °C.

Don't write summer off yet.

The last 5 Aprils have been good. The last five summers have been moderate, occasionally very poor.

Lets hope for a turn around this year.

At least we are getting some much needed rain, despite all the grumbling!!!

Munich maxed at 32.2 °C. This smashes the city record for April of 28.7 °C in 1934. If confirmed it will be a new national record for Germany in April too which was 32.1 °C at Zehdenick, 22nd April 1968.

BTW I found a table of temp records for April I compiled ages ago that got blitzed in the board upgrade, but not updated since a couple of years ago.

Poland April record looks to have been broken with 31.2 °C at Słubice

The previous record was +30,9 °C, set also at Słubice on 23 April 1968.

Some daily/location records went too in the Czech Republic but don't know if the alltime national record for April went. Certainly an April record for Prague at 30.5 °C. Google translation of extract:

Quote

Temperatures were breaking records not only in Prague, where there are regular measurements since 1775. For today's recorded a record 25.9 degrees Celsius from 1800 and 1866. Also, all stations were measured in western Bohemia today for its historical maximum temperature. Highest in Pilsen-Bolevec, at 31.0 degrees Celsius. Temperature records fell at all stations in Northern Bohemia.

Not Eastern Europe, but still related to the heatwave...

Switzerland

The extraordinary surge of warm air combined with Föhn provided in many areas record April temperatures for German-speaking Switzerland . The temperatures reached maximum values of 27 to 30 degrees! [ 30.5 °C at Beznau Nucelar Plant in Aargau canton]
