After a rather drab Easter it's looking all a bit grim for this coming long weekend isn't it? Rather cool - perhaps even genuinely cold - and cloudy pretty much everywhere, even with air frosts in places, although how much rain there will be and where still seems open to question. The far NW looks the best bet for sunshine atm.

This BH seems to have a particularly malignant reputation for poor weather though history shows that it is probably no more inconsistent than any other.

Rather than clog up Model Chat with moans and groans, let's keep a thread for cataloguing if this weekend does live down to the worst expectations

Not sure we need a 'chat' thread when many single words or short phrases I can think of sum up this weekends likely outcome - most of which I'd get told off for using on a friednly forum like UKWW ;)

GFS 06Z is pretty grim.. maxes of 6-7C on Saturday. -5 to -6C is forecast in places on Sunday morning (in May!?!) then maxes of 8-11C on Sunday. The 00Z op even had -0C as a max in E Scotland on Sunday at 12Z but now has 2-3C.For Monday morning mins of -3 to -4C -even in Ireland- are forecast.

Use your imagination ;). The Saturday looks spectacularly dreich, runs consistently showing max temps well below 10 °C. Even Benelux and northern Germany look lousy - bit of a shock after they've had temps in the 20s for a few days!

We had snow early May two years ago, anyone know what the temps were generally like then?

I'm a little wary of the potential for frost this weekend as we may be getting some frost damaged walls repaired this Friday. The work could have been done weeks ago but the builder had originally put it off 'til May. I did think he'd missed the boat come the end of March. Don't really want to have to call him and put it off again.

It's a stinker alright... the only positive thing I can say is at least there won't be a howling gale force wind... !

The May Day bank holiday is an ideal time to make the most of events in London, and in 2012 there's even more going on. Spring is in full swing...

Take the whole family along to this year's SunWalk London event and meet Peppa Pig and George at the walking challenge held within Battersea Park.

Just make sure that you take your thermals and an emergency survival blanket  :D

GFS 12Z has minima down to -6 °C now for some northern parts of England on Sunday morning and -5 °C on Monday morning!

Which would suggest clear nights, but the low daytime maxima also suggest stubborn low cloud cover - so not sure how that's going to work!

Looks a little cold for my son's cricket. Not sure a woolly hat, scarf, gloves and michelin layers will be conducive to skilled play!

Aye, GFS is a bit odd there. But then, their temp predictions are usually about as reliable this far out as a trabant with no petrol and 4 flat tires.

Wasn't sure where to put this, so thought it was vaguely relevant here as it's chat, but I notice Philip Eden hasn't posted his May forecast yet. Does anyone know if he's said why, anywhere*? It could be as mundane as busy or travelling, but I wondered if there was met based reason.

*actually, as an aside if there is a place where he does post regularly, it might be interesting to know as good reference. I'm sure he won't be the only knowledgeable person posting there.

IIRC he is/was a regular on uk.sci.weather. I don't follow usenet these days but have seen a few references to there.
