Unlike the preceding two months, April was dominated by low pressure systems, often tracking well south and very slowly. It was the first time here that April was colder than the March it followed since 1991. It was especially unsettled from Easter Monday (9th) with frequent rain and showery downpours, some of these prolonged and with thunder. There were many rather cool days and nights with two air frosts, and only the 30th was a genuinely warm day. This was the third coldest April in these site records and the fourth wettest, the rainfall total being more than twice the April normal. There were also some strong winds, and sunshine hours were rather lower than normal at about 85%.

An absolutely amazing month here, never seen so much rain fall and had lots of convection and a few thunderstorms to boot! I love the fact that April 2011 we had only 3mm all month, 2010 just 9mm. April generally in later years has been a pretty dry month for us. Also even more amazingly appart from being my wettest April recorded (since 2004) I never actually broke any records in rainfall, although I have to check as I think its probably the wettest month I've ever recorded. However we are only 5 days into May and we are already and we are already at nearly half of last months total. Interesting times!

STATION NOTES.

April was a very wet cold month but it was not a record breaker there were colder and wetter Aprils than this year.

The first precipitation which was recorded was the snow of the morning of the 4th which had melted away by noon this gave 7.6mm. We were in for a month of Power Showers with hail mixed in you had only to travel half a mile and you would miss the rain. We had a very wet day on the 18th with 26.5 mm falling then on the 25th 25.6 mm and on the 26th 25.2 mm finally on the 29th 20.0 mm a total of 172.8 mm was recorded and this is still short of April 2000 when 179.4 mm was recorded contrast this with last April when 20.1 mm was recorded.

The month commenced with warm and sunny condition with 11.70 hours of sunshine recorded on the 1st by the 4th it was cold with a maximum of only 5.0c recorded. Temperatures never recovered until the maximum of 16.5 c on the 30th Lower double digit maximums were the norm throughout the month. The coldest nights were the 15th and 16th when the minimum was 1.0c and the warmest night was on the 9th with a maximum of 7.6c.

Pressure was a feature on the 17th when the low moved in 991 mb was recorded on the 18th during the period the persistent low was present 978 mb was recorded and it was during that period until the 28th when pressure rose to 1016 mm that there was any improvement in conditions

Here are the stats form my site amid the rolling Midlothian countryside. :)

SUMMERY

It was a cold wet month. It was 2.75C colder than March and there was only 5 days without recordable rainfall. The wettest day was on the 10th with 16.8mm and the second wettest was the 2nd with 6.6mm.Its somewhat of a suprise that the rainfall for the month was 66.9mm as it seemed wetter than that to me ,although it was over four times as much rain as in March.
