Apparently 'many' trees ripped out of the ground by Cokethorpe School in Whitney. Maybe someone nearby could investigate tomorrow?

Drove past this morning on way to work, lots of big trees up or damaged and saw set of goalposts wrapped around the remains of a tree too - will try to take pics tonight if I get the chance.... All concentrated to one area and you can see the path it took from the line of damage, which is fairly wide, maybe 50M (complete rough guess)...

Recently uploaded video from somebody filming the developing funnel/tornado at the West Oxfordshire sailing club (just SE of the tornadoes suspected track).

Thanks to John Spiers @squeezyjohn for forwarding his video

First spotted while driving along the A34 near the M40 yesterday at about 4.30pm. This storm travelled up from Wiltshire and moved northeast over Eynsham and Bicester before heading towards Milton Keynes. The 3 parts of this video were taken on and around the A34 as the storm passed over (I should admit that the section at the beginning was taken after the storm had passed overhead). You can clearly see the formation of the vortex in the first part and at the end of this vid I run away to my car like a big girl as bits of hail and debris start to hit me!

Obviously what you are seeing here is not a real tornado, just the vortex that could cause one - but there are several reports of it "touching down" on the ground in several villages in Oxfordshire.

Following my first report from Eynsham (not Aynsham as in an earlier thread...and pronounced "Ennsham"), the tornado must have travelled west to east, from Witney Road via Bartholomew School/Back Lane on to Beech Road and Eynsham Primary school. You can use Google Earth to see this path. The tornado blew out windows in Eynsham Primary School where my wife works and roofs have been damaged in its path.

This path is directly parallel to the street I live in (about 500 yards away) and where I was watching from, and realise that the odd sound I heard was the storm passing as well as the strange greenish black colour of the centre of the storm. I only missed the funnel as this was below my roof/eye level!

Thanks Vigman.......... I'm sorry there hasn't been any response here and its a shame no local UKww members have done a site investigation to what is a significant event. I suspect there's a lot of talking going on about it in private subscription-only forums though.

I will be conducting a site investigation for TORRO on Saturday 12th to gather more information on the track length etc. If anyone has any further nformation and/or pictures please feel free to post them here on UKww.

I don't think this one has been posted here yet (but mods please feel free to delete if it has). Again, it's from Eynsham and shows rotation:

Also, have been reading analysis here:

http://ukasf.co.uk/storm-forecasts/166

I strikes me that one thing that needs to be pinned down - and possibly key to an understanding of whether we are looking at one or more tornadoes/funnels - is the timing of events. Some of the accounts seem to be at odds on this, though I guess some of that could be down to the excitement of the moment.

As some of my friends at Skywarn have pointed out, none the videos that I/we have seen yet show any contact with the ground. Perhaps the SI will be able to detemine? There is certainly more than enough footage of strong, organised rotation.

Chris - as I'm sure you're aware, visual contact of a funnel cloud to ground is not required for a tornado to be present. The key will be in finding a damage path.

Thread is started for a possible tornado event in the OX29 post code region. Initial report via twitter.

Any further info please post here?

Hi Tony and any others with an input.
Yesterday the Daily Blither had a nearly full page photo of the funnel cloud seen near Bicester?
The newspaper then grandly announced that the 'giant hail and tornado' were from the supercell that was in the area and backed up the story with an alleged quote from a professional meteorologist wh supplied the sort of general info' you could get from Wikipeadia if you looked up 'tornado' or 'supercell
my question is - was this a supercell? because when the papers start producing such articles it's usually a load of tosh and I would like to know what actually was the situation on that day
.
Cheers

Absolutely Paul. Just making the point that the video is inconclusive. Looking forward to the results of the SI

Several things - Bren knows his stuff with regard to storms, and the quote was spot on. The info you can get on Wikipedia is excellent these days - well worth a read if you want to understand supercells. And yes, all the available evidence suggests it was a supercell.

interesting really - when you consider how far this cell had to travel to attain supercellular characteristics - this cell had one of the longest paths over the UK landmass possible! Obviously one reason why we don't get as many supercells as the USA - our landmass is just not big enough.

Result of a preliminary test simulation at 250m grid spacing.
7.5-1.5 km 'operational' run initialised with the GFS final analysis at 06 Z. A 100x100km domain with 250 m grid spacing and 48 stretched levels was then initialised at 14 UTC. Model set up has a full treatment of rain, ice, snow and graupel (but not hail) and 3D LES type diffusion. 3D view at T+30 min into the simulation looking north from the south, box 10km high. Cloud water-cyan, cloud ice- white, rain- blue, vertical vorticity- red. A number of interesting features are highlighted. Even at this time a substantial nr surface circulation is present.
