A trick at nights is to place a tube underneath the bedclothes and blow air through it using a centrifugal fan (I use an old fashioned portable ladies hairdrier with the head cover removed, obviously without the heater on)

It does work a treat since as well as providing airflow over the body, it avoids humidity and heat from your building up beneath the bedclothes, but it can cool your feet too much if placed at the bottom of the bed and give you cramp! I'm sure this idea could be developed into an energy efficient method of cooling if it was integrated within a partially air tight the mattress or pillow in some way or a quiet miniature air conditioning system. It could also be used to filter pollen, yet another tyrant of late spring!

Hey Bo,

Most homes do not have the support strength for the 70's water bed; however, I have heard of a water, pillow top, mattress, (HealthPlus http://www.waterbed-pillow-cushion.com ). A thin sheet and 40-80 liters of water would certainly help, as do ceiling fans. As to hooking up hoses and the like... Even the astronauts cannot wait to get their suits off... Passive systems are almost always the best way forward; but, carrying your thermal control around with you, well it just...

This is interesting. I find 20 degrees room temp to be completely comfortable for sleeping. Not ideal but certainly not too warm.. Last summer, even with a bedroom temp of 24 I was ok with a fan blowing over me. Only once when the temp was around 26 did I have to bail and go and sleep in my spare room which is on the east facing ground floor (which is always cooler, but then has a different problem for sleep this time of year of streaming sunlight at 5am). As others have said, I think the key is keeping blinds and curtains shut during the day to stop the temp from rising too high to begin
