A very confused month - cold in the first half and very warm for the last third...

RF 43.3
Avg hPa 1011
Max hPa 1023
Min Hpa 998
Max 26.8
Min -0.8
Min Max 6.7
Max Min 14.4
Avg.Max 16.2
Avg Min 7.9
AVG 12.03

9 days over 20C in succession and 4 over 25C makes it a notable May warm spell (my best), but the start of the month was drastically below average.

Whilst both temperature and rainfall ended up as near average in these site records, that belies the fact that this was a month of extremes. The first 10 days were cold and wet, with the early May Day Bank Holiday weekend especially dismal, the 6th having the coldest daytime temperature for a May day in these records. A run of 4 consecutive May days with the daytime high temperature not reaching 10 °C was an unwelcome first. The last 9 days of the month however balanced this with the longest May spell of hot weather in these records - 6 consecutive days reached 25 °C or higher. Virtually all the month's rain fell in the first half of the month but at 45.7 mm was only a fraction above average. Sunshine ended at about 85% of average, the first 10 days were very dull but the 22nd - 28th was a very sunny spell.

Had the late May hot spell not been as marked, but a more normal late May warm spell, I expect quite a lot of stations in Scotland and perhaps elsewhere would have ended up cooler in May than in March 2012; however at present the only example I can find is Baltasound in Shetland, where the mean for March 2012 was 7.3 deg. C. and the mean for May only 7.1 deg. C. - see http://www.met.readi...ge/Mar2012.html and http://www.met.readi...ugge/PREV.html. However I think the great majority, possibly all or nearly all, though I have not time to check, of sites were warmer in March 2012 than in April; the last time this happened generally was in 1998 I believe.
