Winds have suddenly become very gusty in Southampton just now - twigs etc blowing around already. A very quick turn-around in weather conditions from when I got home about 2 hrs ago.

Very interesting how quickly the winds built up. I left work at Worthing at about 17.00 and it was still relatively calm at ground level. However, I did notice when I looked up at the sky from the railway station platform that the mid level clouds were already racing across the sky. Clearly a sign of what was to come down on the ground within little more than an hour.

21st June 2012 Weather diary

For what is essentially 'midsummer' day it was very unsettled in places. After early rain moved north it became showery in the south with some thunderstorms near the south east coast mid afternoon and further convective showers and thundestorms breaking out in the NE Midlands and further east towards Lincs and the Wash. A tornado affected parts of Long Sutton (Lincs) and the neighbouring village Lutton about 2.40pm in the afternoon destroying greenhouses and taking off a shed roof in the Seagate Road area. Later a deepening low of around 1000mb ran quite quickly NE from NE of Brittany towards the Isle of Wight with a wrap around occlusion. The low had a circular eye type feature as well with a well marked dry slot - though there was no suggestion the system was warm cored. However strong W-SW winds developed over the Channel Islands and Brittany with gusts to 60kts at Ushant, Brittany. It then moved up across the south of England and brought further showery rain along with storm winds through the Channel for a time, the Arun Platform nr the coast at Worthing recorded mean winds of 48kts (55mph) at about 2030 , St Catherine Point (Isle of Wight) gusted to 67mph at 20Z and further east Shoreham Beach, a private AWS, unofficially gusted to 58mph. The Needles gusted to xx mph (data awaited) At the Isle of Wight festival a number of the attractions closed over safety concerns and all the big tents were emptied due to structural problems. There was a level crossing failure at Shoreham by Sea train station as one of the barriers was 'bent' sideways by the wind. Another similar problem occured at Worthing. Trees were blown down , fencing was blown onto the A259 coast road at Peacehaven. In central Brighton the main road at Queen's Road was closed due to fallen scaffolding between North Road and North Street. Power cables fell onto the A21 road at Lamberhurst.

That would be bad in November, I'm not sure how this month can actually get any worse. It's simply the worst summer month I can remember!

You might want to pop a tornado in your weather diary too Dave...

After a brief spell of very windy weather, all has calmed down again as the low cemtre passes over!

Quite a surreal day for the end of June down here.

22:56 BST. Heavy rain has been replaced by clear conditions, so looks like the "eye" is over the Liverpool - Manchester conurbation. The expected heavy rain will no doubt hit during the morning rush hour. Chilly as well - 10.3C is well down for a mid-June evening.

I wish my station was up and running as the winds here have picked up enough with the "wall" of this LP coming through that I can hear bins and other debris being blown around outside.

Very heavy rain now moved into Manchester, and a significant amount is crossing the Pennines into the River Don catchment (it is raining here).

It won't be 2007 but I wouldn't be suprised to see some flooding from the rivers on the Yorkshire side, as well as in Lancashire...

Only 6.6mm today in Sheffield however (so far) and the heaviest rain looks like heading to Leeds.

Yes, I'd go for Todmorden/Hebden Bridge/Walsden as being at high risk - the upper Calder is a problem river, though there has been some work done in the last few years.

Raining quite hard here in Doncaster now, but only 3.6mm so far.
