whats the trigger temperature for us down here in the south ?

Going by a 05z ascent at Larkhill (attached), it looks to be around 27C for surface-based, though IMO any storms are more likely to fire off the top of that warm layer at 950mb if they can get past some slight capping above that. GFS forecast soundings suggest slightly higher temp req.

Just had a light shower from AcCas in Colchester, mid and upper cloud now dispersing and the temperature is climbing rapidly. I'm guessing we're probably a little too far south for today's action, plus the sea may have too much influence on the boundary layer.

Need something to fire SW of here, rapidly go supercellular and veer sharply to the right.... :)

large outflow boundary spilled out the cell as it passed over NW Leicestershire - this tells me that this cell is about to die...

General low volume rumbles around still, think they're off to the S & SW.

Ah - we keep hearing low volume thunder. Glad its not just me! I definitely saw a flash earlier too - but we are right on the edge of the main event. Depends what if anything forms behind this lot - more storms are firing behind the main mass.

It's the ones over the southern Peaks and that one over Kidderminster that I'm keeping an eye on. The latter is a long way off though.

Been quite a few visible flashes over here to your E, but the cloud is just general mush.

Can see the tops of some chunky looking cumulus going up SW of Colchester now. Cannot see if they are low- or high- based as yet though...

Cell near Loughborough looking very suspicious on radar - possible HP supercell. In addition, the cell back down just NE of Brecon has been moving at a deviant angle, and may be a supercell.

The cell that was NE of Brecon earlier is now just to the East of Shrewsbury. If you look at the radar sequence it's a right mover to the main flow for sure.

Stuart - new cells appear to be developing in the wake of the big cell that passed through Leics an hour ago

Blanket cloud has cleared and we have sunshine now. Towers all round and obvious low level shear as low cloud from evaporation is blowing NW whilst the storms are moving more NE. Ground level flow is an ESE breeze.

I wonder if this is the first time the UK has been the most thundery in all of Europe, everywhere else seems very quite, although Eastern France is forecast to fire up later on

Well that was fun...some heavy thundery rain am and one helluva little storm around lunchtime, got a few snaps.

Vis almost down to zero at one point, localised flooding and during the second downpour temp didn't fall below 20C, juicy! hopefully number three developing as we speak, but that would be greedy [y]

Cell over Leicester looks to be right trending again - and off scale on the radar. Large hail?

Edit: Posted same time as Stu

Still murky and cloudy here - the odd patch of blue sky in places. Get the odd glimpse of a tower, but views still largely obscured.
Heavy rain to the W at the moment, over the Peaks, but vis that way is poor, can't see the tops of the first line of hills, most of the time.

Still stuff to the SW though, moving in the right direction. The one I incorrectly said was at Kidderminster (was in a hurry at the time) is now E of Stoke and still looking good for Sheffield.
Mansfield to Leicester looks to be the best region for the next hour or so now, though (or S as far as Northants).

EDIT should have zoomed the radar out. :)

The NW coast is getting hammered, and Carlisle and possibly Darlington also getting some stuff.
