At least 10 people died, 20 were missing and 50,000 were ordered to evacuate as the heaviest rainfall on record pounded the southwestern Japanese island of Kyushu, officials and reports said Thursday.
Emergency workers in Kumamoto prefecture responded to multiple reports of mudslides swallowing houses and people being trapped, with access roads blocked by mud or gushing water, officials said.Troops have been deployed with nearly 100 millimetres (four inches) of rain falling in a hour in some areas.

If you got to http://www.data.jma....e/pre24h00.html

and use google translate and scroll down to the Kumamoto Prefecture which is near the bottom there are some fairly Biblical amounts of daily rainfall there, e.g. Aso Otohime with 507.5 mm in 24 hours, which beats daily rainfall records set in 1990.

That's some astonishing footage and the amounts of rainfall in such a short time very very humbling...
