What I thought was scud having looked at it through binoculars 5 minutes after taking a photo was in fact a funnel. Must have snapped it moments before it fell apart. Only just had chance to unload camera....

Is it me John, or are there two there??? Same cloud base but on RHS. Appearance of something scudsuckery.

Cader Idris spwans funnels. Saw a well develped funnel over Cader on road north of Tywyn back in August 2001, the day before John took his first 'pencil funnel' photo, as within his blog.

Had a pan-round of the hi-res version, Nigel - everything else is scud, the long vortex being the sole 'smoothie'! I guess the fact that Cadair Idris rises like a wall with the winding and deep Dulas valley from Mach to Corris leading to its foot must promote a lot of local vorticity at low levels, especially in a southerly airflow as was the case Saturday. I know a lot of people who have seen funnels in this area - one was snapped in April this year during another convergence-type convective event, although this was in a NW airflow on the other side of Cadair - guess the process works both ways! The fact that the military jet photographers hang out in the vicinity to shoot jets going round the Mach Loop is starting to help in this context - it was one of those guys who got the April one! This is the fifth funnel I've photographed from pretty much the same spot - and I bet I've missed plenty by being elsewhere at the time!

Digital zoom will be up on my website soon - normal progress was interrupted by an extremely irritating drive-by infection on my PC yesterday - see FROUKS for the gory details!
