The plume and its heat has pushed east today, Cottbus in the old East Germany is at 37.9 °C. It's back to Spain for the normal pacesetters: Andújar at 41.7 °C

Weather Historian (Christopher Burt) on WU mentions a new national heat record for the Czech Republic.
"A new national all-time heat record has been broken for the Czech Republic today (August 20) with a reading of 40.4°C (104.7°F) at Dobrichovice. This just edges out the former record of 40.2°C (104.4°F) from Uhrineves set on July 27, 1983."
He also mentions a very high Spanish temp from of 47.1°C (116.8°F) on 10th/11th? at Mengibar, Jaen Province a location about 55 miles east of Cordoba.

All these beat the 30.5° in Lund on the 25 July.

Hi Jonathan, it's funny because I was also trying to find the value which you speaking of and I think I've now found it: apart from the 44.0°C in Toulouse in 1923 (poor equipment at that time, so not a valid record) and apart from the 44.1°C in Conqueyrac and Saint-Christol-lès-Alès (Météo France was kinda reluctant to recognize it officially), there is 44.3°C in Lédignan (Gard), which is also an unofficial value.
The truly official record belongs to Sartène (Corsica), with 43.4°C in July 2009 if I remember well.
